i believe the ramen @ central you're referring to is the Santouka  Smiley

my sis said its very good... but its a small place, so long queues are expected.

most probably Marutamen, simply the best chicken stock ramen in town.  hardcore jap joint run by japs.

Hey Jeremy,

Yes thats the one. Always cannot rememebr the name. YES YES. The chicken broth is clear yet packed with so much flavours Smiley The additional pork belly is melt in your mouth soft. Runny egg is extremely tasty too Smiley

Victorau,

Santouka is the one on 2nd floor near teh escalator With a River view ? the ramen there is comparable too. Smiley Queue expected after 1215pm during lunch. Expect to go earlier to get seats. Smiley

I prefer marutamen in general, but if Santouka has stock of pig cheeks, and there's no queue, I'd prefer that by a tiny bit. But still, both are great!

The marutamen in liang court is a little more empty and just a short walk away.

How about... Tomo Fine Dining? The omakase there was amazing... just only cost me... a lot of $$. Heh

Marutamen and Santouka for Ramen for me. The soba at Paragon is pretty good too. The name eludes me but they are next to Spageddies in the basement of Paragon.

brought my mom to Santouka on Sunday for Mother's Day dinner...

there was a small queue when we got there, and it's only 6pm! The place is very small, less than 20 tables, fully packed with quite a large number of Japanese customers.

We ordered the combo (rice + ramen set), and i must say it was darn good!  Grin

A bit pricey, but good! Smiley

I still feel Japanese food here is lacking to those overseas, and not just in japan.

Really? You should try NZ - The selection and range is so much smaller. As for quality, it matches with those few restaurants (not chain ones) in SG. I tried in Auckland as well as Queenstown.

I hope you understand that it was a generalisation - there are so many countries overseas - I expect it will be hard to find good Japanese food in Africa for example. Using price-performance ratio too, Singapore is lacking.

To me, Singapore's standard of Japanese food is not up there, not even those run by real Japanese people. Perhaps the competition here is a lot lesser. For example, in Vancouver, where there are many Japanese migrants, also Korean etc, the competition is great, and the food is authentic, fantastic, and much cheaper than the steep prices charged in Singapore just to get an authentic taste.

Queenstown is not a very big place, so it might be harder to find good Jap food there. Auckland being a big city, will definitely have good restaurants, you just need to search for it. In Canada, the best one I tried was actually in a national park in Jasper, and there were about less than 20 restaurants altogether there.

Hi guys, I'm not sure if anyone else has mentioned this before but I can honestly say that Shokudo "Streets of Japan" in Heeren's basement produces possibly the best bowl of ramen I have ever eaten in Singapore! The noodles were perfect as far as I'm concerned, and the stock was extremely tasty. This definitely beats the ramen outlets anywhere in locally. Hey, Isetan flew in Japanese chefs and ingredients for their food bazaar last time and their $18 bowl of ramen can't even beat the flavour and noodles of Shokudo's! I don't really know if I went on a really good day, but the ramen there was certainly unexpectedly good.

I ordered the beef ramen with spicy soup ($9.80). My only regret is that I didn't order the char siew ramen, as the soup would have matched it perfectly.

i been to tokyo shinjuku to try one of the ramens there. this particular one had lots of crunchy veges, and had a miso soup base.
imo it doesn't have that strong taste than marutama/ ajisen. but i enjoyed it nonetheless. perhaps they prefer light taste compared to ours.

but for sushi / sashima, nothing beats tsujiki fish market. theres Japanese restaurant in the village centre, 3 south buona vista road, that ships fish from that very place. for those with money to spurge, its this place.
