Finally, after about two weeks of use and burn-in, its time to review them. I’ll make this short and sweet, not too comprehensive, but just a guide to help those who have problems choosing.

Background
I ordered these from Earpeace in late January, and they recently arrived mid-May. My colour choice was clear on clear, dual drivers (back then there was only dual drivers). It was indeed an excruciating wait of 4 months for me without a proper pair of earphones, and I had to make do with a pair of Klipsch Custom-1s. Finally, one day when I visited the forums on Jaben, they informed me that my Livewires were finally in! Overjoyed, I went down to collect it.

Initial Impressions
The Livewires came with a different packaging than what I had expected. All they gave was a black case (similar to that of Freqs and Crossroads), together with a cleaning tool. Nothing else, no indication that this was of the product Livewires! Hmm.. a little weird here. The cables were white, and not the black cables which I expected. Build was acrylic and very firm, with some parts of the acrylic smothered out. Overall, it looked simple and sweet, exactly what I wanted.

I mainly listen to classical and jazz lossless, so here goes:

Haydn Trumpet Concerto in Eb Major
Performed by Y Symphony of New York

Composed in 1976, this piece marks a significant milestone in the history of classical music. Joseph Haydn, composed this piece for his long time friend Anton Weidinger, a trumpetist. Performed by the Y Symphony of New York, this piece is indeed an innovation on its own, one of the finest pieces by none other than Haydn himself.

Of course, what struck me first in this piece was the violins and violas. The strings section was clear and sharp, not striking but just enough to accompany the trumpets. Each and every note by the violins could be heard clearly and absolutely. The distinct tone of the trumpets was what struck me the most. As compared to my Soundsticks, the Soundsticks were no match for the Livewires. However, I felt that soundstage was lacking a little. Not too bad, but still could be improved. It felt as though I was sitting in a real concert hall, with excellent acoustics and intricate structures to maintain the quality of the music. An enriching experience.

Waltz for Debby Gold CD
Performed by Bill Evans Trio

Bill Evans Trio was a famous jazz trio set in the 1960s. Waltz for Debby is one of the most treasured albums in his collection. Together with bassist Scott LaFaro and Paul Motian, they recorded their last few albums as a trio, before LaFaro was killed in an accident. This great jazz recording is internationally acclaimed, as one of the best well-composed jazz piece of all time. Time to put it to the test!

The EQ for this song originally set by the sound engineer was to have the bass and piano on different sides, as such the soundstage was fantastic, with the sweet melody entering my right ear, while the accompanying bass filling the left, with drums in the background. Bass was not too boomy, however, it leaned towards overpowering the melody and the drums. Clarity was almost perfect; every note was well articulated. Indeed, I do concur that this is one of the finest live jazz recordings, one that would inspire future jazz players and impress audiophiles.

Sound Quality

Soundstage/Clarity
There is a clear identification of where instruments are placed, or at least imaginable, when one takes a good listen. However, it does seem to lack for some songs, but soundstage on Livewires is adequate, just right. Overall: 4/5

Bass
When out of the box, the bass seemed audible, but hardly accompanying the melody. Of course, I was disappointed, but I knew that there was a solution. After 200 hours of burn-in, it was fantastic, not too boomy, not inaudible, but just deliciously crisp. The texture and tonality of the bass, articulated from instruments made of the finest quality was certainly not to be missed. Overall: 5/5

Mids
Mids weren’t so clearly defined, or so I felt. The lack of the middle keys on instruments such as keyboard weren’t striking enough. However, it does its job adequately, providing for the bass and highs to shine. Overall: 4.5/5

Highs
This is what the Livewires shine for. The trebles and highs produced by the drivers are excellent, just pure excellent. Overall: 5/5

Conclusion
Coming from a triple.fi user, I believe that this is a huge improvement, not only in terms of isolation. For one who is looking at a cheap yet excellent in terms of quality and build, get your Livewires now! At a good deal of only US$249, this is not one to be missed. Finally, I can sleep on my side!

well, here's an opinion from someone who switched from er4 to livewires 2.

What i don't like

The most obvious opinion being the livewires aren't bight enough for my liking. In fact i feel it's very veiled, but hopefully it improves after burn in. The instruments are held at the back while the vocals are brought forward as compared to the er4, which is something that i don't like since i would very much prefer it to be the other way around. Its rather muffled in terms of the mids in my opinion, but compared to the er4, almost every earpiece sounds the same.

Heres the good part

Again compared to the er4, the bass of the livewires are much better. Not nearly as tight and deep, but somewhat smoother and more enjoyable. The sound is much less analytical, more towards the kind of sound that i would listen on a casual basis. Though many claim that the strong point of the livewires would be its soundstage, i dare not comment on that since it hasn't really fully burned in fully yet. The mids are smooth and clear as of now and i hope it gets better. The instrumental seperation isn't as good as the er4 but i would say its more enjoyable this way. Best part of the livewires? The seal. Particularly for people who are moving from universals to full customs. I have to comment on jaben's earmold skills. For a moment i actually thought that no one was qualified in jaben to make the molds. But the great job that they did this time around, really changed my opinion. The seal is so good that i barely want to take it out once i've put it on. Great way to concentrate while working.

additional pointers

Initially i was a little disappointed with the sound when it hasn't burned in. But i would appeal to many new users to be patient with these things, they really improve with time. The er4 presents a more analytical and bright sound signature that aims to surprise people with crystal clear details that you can barely hear with other earpieces. In fact the first time i used it, i was really impressed since i was hearing new things coming out almost every song in my ipod. So far, the live wires are presenting something more soothing that i can listen to sleep. I would say it is neither an upgrade or downgrade. Rather, these 2 earpieces present 2 totally different sound signatures, thus both are worth keeping (bad news to those who are hoping for a cheap er4 for sale under the classifieds).

Finally got my livewires Cheesy must say thanks to all the guys at Jaben for helping me out putting them on for the first time was a huge pain (both literally and figuratively)!

Having owned both the um2 and the sf5pro, I find that my livewire duals are the best pair of iems i've heard in the dual driver range so far. The livewires posess what i enjoy from both of the abovementioned iems, the clarity and accuracy of the um2, and the "fun sound" of the sf5pro. I even dare say that the livewires are a step above many of the triple driver iems in the market, inclusive of the um3x and the tf10pro (both I considered purchasing).

Note to all those waiting for their livewires though: these babies do take some time to burn in. When i first got my livewires, what I heard hardly impressed me. The soundstage seemed veiled, and the bass sounded muddy and hardly prominent. However, after about 20 hours, the veil lifted and the wide soundstage of the livewires were apparent, as well as the tight, thumping bass.

If I do have the time, I may write a full review on my livewires. Till then, do consider getting the livewires! Trust me, you will NOT be disappointed. (:

These things really surprise me even after such a long time. Although i've already given my opinion on these babies, having thought that it has already settled in after hours days of burn in, they just continue to improve and frankly speaking i can't see an end to it... initially i would rank livewires below that of my etymotics in terms of most prefered earphones. Now i'm really having trouble deciding...

Yo Dennis, how is it now after a few months? Does it get much better?

after about a year of having the livewires. I believe they have fully settled in. staging has improved tremendously, details still lacking IMO. Bass is deep and suffice for my ears. I personally find the mid range of the livewires its strongest point. Perhaps the highs will be better with the improved livewires3. Cheers to Livewires for making such a good product. Had/having/will be having a great experience with them.
