Hi Friends and Jabenites,
It’s been quite a while since the last post, and I trust all is well with everyone. In spite of the predicted doom and the gloom it looks like we have all been well, except probably for the occasional flu bug and we’ve about reached the end of the year.
It’s the time for festivities with the New Year making its way around the corner.
Something struck me as very odd lately… I remember way back when visiting many places how shopping was so exciting. I remember visiting Foyles and it was so overwhelming to see so many books under one roof. Yet subsequent visits were a letdown. The same holds true for all the visits to the large malls all over the world. What changed?
During my recent gallivant, I found the cab fares to be acceptable, yet I considered it exorbitant years ago. What changed? I realized that it was Singapore that changed. Everything was cheaper or less developed then. Book stores were not as large then and cab fares were much cheaper. It was the same for food too. Everything has gone up drastically here and the differential isn’t as much as it was then. I suppose the exchange rates helped too.
The rapid changes have immunized, at least me, to the relative cost of everything. I have always believed it is cheaper to buy gadgets than to eat and it seems so true today.
Scouring the old haunts during my recent walkabout abroad, I chanced upon some film cameras in a dingy store and to my greatest surprise, equipment that used to cost thousands and thousands of dollars were going for a song. My friend who was with me went berserk and bought a couple of real goodies for a song. He thinks, like records, film will make its way back to a small select of enthusiasts.
Along the way, I bumped into an old friend who was also obsessed with film cameras. He was really nice… he gave me a small folder. It’s a Balda which is a derivative of the Minox 35mm camera. The flash is detachable and it is quite small without it. I understand there were also Russian copies of this camera.
The last couple of weeks, I’ve been reading, hearing and seeing the fall of the Berlin Wall. Unfortunately for me I did not witness first hand the fall, but I did go there a short while after the wall came down. My friend Robert took me there on a bike and I was riding pillion. The eastern part of Germany then was really pretty and I hope it stayed the same. We had a good time touring the place. There were lots of Trabants which were smoky and noisy.
The greatest excitement in store was the ride home. The headlamp blew and we were riding in pitch darkness. Robert who happens to be a top-notch biker brought us home safe and sound. It was also raining and that added to the sense of danger. The greatest regret Robert had was; he wished he did what he told me he wanted to do way back. Before the wall was demolished, substantially large farms close to the wall was worth very little. If he had bought one then, he would be a very rich man today.
The constant mention of the fall of the Berlin wall encouraged me to read up about it. Strange… it appears the wall came down because of an error in the announcement by a minister. Strange and weird because the super powers tried their best to remove that wall and all it took was one little mistake.
On the headphone-centric side, a few nice goodies have arrived… new amps and new earphones. Drop by and audition them... some of them were displayed at the recent headphone show in Japan. Linearossa
W1 & the W3 was introduced at the Japanese headohone show and was very well received. The Linearossa product line can be viewed here… www.linearossa.org
. The W1 is very exciting as it runs off one “AAA” battery. The sound is typically RudiStor and it is super affordable.
Here's a picture of the Linearossa W1GoVibe
also introduced three new models, the Sharps, PPK and the Derringer-i
