if you like ibanezes check out the BTB or SR series, these are the prestige series. they are about 1000. you can also look at the ATK series which has very good reviews. this might be slightly over your budget.
i wont recommend you get any new yamahas, especially the RBX A2. the only yamaha i'd consider is either the BBNE2, TRB series or Billy Sheehan signature model but all these are way above your budget.
if not 800 can get you a 2nd hand made in japan fender jazz/precision. 1000 can get you a new made in japan fender jazz/precision. made in usa models are way too expensive. made in mexico fenders are about that price as well.
in anyway these are just suggestions. try it out before you buy. strap it on. try it sitting down and standing up.

how about cort basses? been reading up a bit, seems like their basses aren't bad?
