I came across this over at xtremeplace.com, and this guy buys a new CD and proceeds to 'demag the CD'. The effect was that it 'really opens up a lot than before'.
I'm curious, how does one demag a CD? Are the said benefits real?

Did you ever research on how does a CD carry digital data?? There is NOTHING related to what you've mentioned.

Dude. Compact disc DON'T store their data my magnetics. Only Hard Disk Drives does, and its just going to screw it up by demagnetising it. The only thing I heard about improving CD readability is by colouring the edges of the compact disc with green markers. That and also ensure your CD is in pristine condition.

Very insightful articles! Never knew about it. Guess every bit counts in the audio world.

i left my demagnetiser, a bedini clarifier at jaben some time back for anybody interested to try,
but no one seemed interested to even try.
here's a review
<http://www.bedini.com/neillreview%20.htm>
the effects can be heard after ripping to mp3, but too lazy to rerip all my discs.

errr, do you have any sources to help you in explain the colouring CD edges? i am interested

Hrm. if its dust sticking to the CD I'll wipe the dust particles off with a cloth. If its the electrostatic bits inside the polymer that are being aligned to create a magnetic force, then show me the equations leading to the alignment of the charges and the magnetic force and I'll buy it if it is convincing.
If the manufacturers are as technically savvy as their flowery language seem to indicate, why isn't their seemingly scientific basis supported by a single equation; instead the article only contains disjointed arguments.
Besides, if one is concerned re magnetic force interference with electronics, isn't the CD player motor generating a magnetic force magnitudes larger than any magnetic force generated by a plastic, non-conducting CD? Perhaps anyone who believes in the CD demagnetiser resolve that first before turning to the demagnetiser. Then again, the motor is shielded so the magnetic force is minimal outside the motor, hence aybe a cheap metal plate below the CD will help shield out the magnetic field? This definitely will be a more convenient solution than using a demagnetiser everytime one plays a CD.
Nevertheless, if one think the demagnetiser will work, it will work, because sound is subjective.

^ yes sound is subjective, but this can be tested. a double blind test can easily reveal its usefulness.
now we need volunteers and equipment lastly a place.

How does the demagnetiser work?

background: "We already knew of the theory behind why demagnetizing CDs nets audible results. The aluminum used for the reflective CD layer is contaminated with ferrous impurities and thus susceptible to magnetizing. Ditto for the ink used for printing the label. When the CD spins at up to 500 RPM, these ferrous particles begin to act as magnets as they are moving in a -- however small -- magnetic field. Let's assume that after an hour's play, all magnetizable particles have activated. We'll thus have a fair amount of magnets rotating inside a magnetic field. Little imagination is required to appreciate that such magnets could have a detrimental effect on all electronic circuits in the vicinity. As we have reported in our article on copying CDs to improve their sound quality, a great deal of the CD system is analog in nature and thus very much prone to external influences such as moving magnetic fields."
working of demagnetiser: "Because Furutech’s deMag Ring Magnet Technology ramps the power up then down again, all residual magnetism is completely removed. " so it means place the cd with surface facing up, press button, sit back and wait. when ok, use the cd.
