Reporting back once again with the progress of my mod. In the end, these were what I did:
1. Damping the inner and outer drivers with dynamat
2. Damping the metal assembly with dynamat (except the spaces around the little holes, too lazy to do that)
3. Replacing the dampening of the inner cups from dynamat to polishing clothes
4. Stuffing the earpad with polyester (taper mod)

I'm happy to say that I'm SUPER satisfied with the mod. I'm looking for a sound that's somewhere between the complete LA2000 and stock version and I'm happy that I've met that objective. Bass response is considerably tightened but not to the tautness of the full mod, allowing the mids to bloom with just a slight touch of bass poisoning. Sibilance is still there but it's diminished to the point that I only have to EQ the high frequencies between 16k to 20k to -1dB. Soundstage is more precise and 3D-like with increased definition. No more recessed mids and treble spikes! And the most surprising thing is that these impressions are out from the headphone out of my laptop (waiting for Compass V2) and I can't wait until I hear it with proper amplification.

Next step? Recable w/ APS or Mogami. Cheesy This can wait until I get the EF1 though, probably a few months under the road.

Not considering Jena Labs since that's the cable Mark uses? But then I will always remember their R10 fiasco...

I've tried a Jena Labs LOD in mini-meets that they are too "sharp" for my liking. I want something more relaxed.

does changing the SXC from the ground to jena tame the highs further?

the difference for the high aren't that great to me, but it has brought out more bass.
mids aren't as forward before, still better then stock though.

Man, you have to be rougher when you twist them earpads. That's the key. Grin

Yeah, I did the pad removal thing you sent me... my white disc was on very very tight! Hurrah! Now it's opened, just somewhat uglier. Sigh.

Bring the dynamat with you when you drop by!

Time to do the taper mod then. Cheesy

OTOH, the assembly inside looks very shoddy lol. I was quite surprised when I found that the yellowish stuff they used to glue the inner cable spilled a bit on the cotton mesh.

Slightly off-topic but which of of your further modification has the most impact on SQ? The wooden cups or the recable?

IMO the recable has more impact for the changes in the SQ, the wooden cups are more of improvement rather then change if u know what i meant.

I see... it's recable next then. Too bad the D2000 is not really popular here so it will be hard to get someone to do it locally for me: I'll have to send it to Alex of APS to do the recabling.

All in due time I hope, after EF1 and Compass.
