So what I'm hearing from you David is that you MIGHT like them?? Maybe?? Just a little??? Glad you like them, and yes the tips do make a difference. For my ears the clear bullets are not the best match, I like either a UM56 or a short Comply Tip. Again this is just my taste. I also start everything without an amp. To me it gives you a false sense of the true earphone. After I listen for a few min without an amp, then I try the amp to see how it matches. Cables also matter. Silver is WAY better than copper in my experiences.

the rendering of the mids was much better with the w3, without bleeding into either the bass or the highs. sad to say, this is bad news indeed for my freqs, which were my favourite IEMs
I told you a gazillion times that FreQ.... and no bass.

Look like I have to give W3 a chance. Maybe I'll just get it tomorrow and have a proper audition at home.

Yes, that's true. Testing an earphone unamped first is the way to go, that's how I try stuff. Disappointed by it? Then try it with an amp. For all going down to try the W3, there's lots of new stuff such as new the new portable amp, portable capacitors and even new LODs/ICs that is available for testing. Such a pity that i'm unable to do that for the following weeks. I just wish to give them a listen! Do try them all out, i'm sure uncle is more than willing to let you guys have a listen to them and there's no harm at all.

Unless its a pair of headphones with high impedance. Might be because I do not have an amp as well. But to me, I still believe that, If its good, its gooooood. Anyway... I'm done here. Will be down tomorrow!

Will be down tomorrow! The Westone 3 do needs an amp to shine. Trying unamped is only to get an idea on how the sound signature will be like and use an amp to get listen to it's potential. On a side note, impedance alone does not determines whether it needs an amp or not. Sensitivity plays apart too.
